Academic Guidance

Hello SUSA Members,

I am very excited to share with you that your SUSA membership includes College Planning and Recruitment Services. Our goal at SUSA is to assist players and families with both the recruitment and college selection process.   I understand the process can be overwhelming and confusing.  To assist you in this endeavor, we are offering a number of grade-level appropriate workshops and individual junior college consultation sessions in hopes of making the college and recruiting process less daunting.

The SUSA College Counseling and Recruitment Program was created to help each student-athlete maneuver through the college process and reach their ultimate goal of playing college soccer. Our goal is to help our student-athletes find both the best academic and athletic fit.

Academics play a huge role in each of our players’ lives and overall profile. We will assist with the NCAA academic guidelines and information and can also help our players select the courses that will position them best for when it is time to apply to college. College selection criteria covered will include tips for communicating with a college, financial aid, academic fit and support, athletic ability and much more.

My experience in coaching and education span over 25 years.  I hold a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Accountability and a Master’s in Special Education. Over the course of my career, I have served as a teacher, Assistant Principal, Director of Special Education, High School Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and currently, I am a district Superintendent and serve on a college admissions advisory board. I have also had the opportunity to coach at all levels.  My background includes coaching college level at St. John’s University, several premier teams, ODP, Long Island Select, and high school.  This experience has enabled me to work with players, parents, and college coaches to find the perfect fit combining both athletic talent and player style.

I am also pleased to share that my wife, Kim Hearney, is a member of the SUSA team.  Her extensive college and high school experience include her current position as the Director of College Counseling at St. Anthony’s High School.  She holds a Master’s of Science in College Student Development and is a NYS certified Guidance Counselor.  She graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Communication and English.  She is also an Admissions Counselor, Academic Advisor, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Suffolk County Community College.  In addition to her private college consulting practice, Kim also serves on multiple university admissions advisory boards.

The education and experience both within the academic setting and on the field that Kim and I have between us, provides our SUSA member families with an unparalleled service not other club can offer. We hope you find this information useful and we are always here to assist you with any questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact Kim at or me at
